In an effort to make sure everyone has the opportunity to hear about the trip before spots are taken, there is an automatic waitlist.  That means your student has not missed out! Every traveler will automatically join a waitlist for this tour while considerations for the selection process are being had amongst LaGuardia deans, guidance team and principal.

You can watch the recording with the link below, or see the attached PDFfor all details covered in the meeting. In addition to this, the Q/A from last night’s sign in is also attached.

  • Physical Education and Health at LaGuardia Letter to Families (9.21.23)

    September 21, 2023

    Greetings, LaGuardia Families:

We understand that the changes created by the new 41-minute bell schedule have created some confusion regarding Physical Education and Health. This document should explain some of the programming issues and provide some options for the future. We hope that this information will answer any remaining questions.

For current seniors, Health is available through the blended learning iLearnNYC program. iLearnNYC is a learning portal designed to broaden and enhance school course offerings. Health through iLearnNYC will fulfill the 1.00 credit required for New York State Graduation.

Due to staffing, seats are limited for the iLearnNYC option. If a senior currently enrolled in Health opts, and is selected, to take the iLearnNYC course, they must take another course instead of Health, which can shuffle their current program around. This option will require that the student attend class during 11th period one day a week (Tuesday or Thursday) and complete the remainder of the learning asynchronously. At this time, eligible seniors can join this blended course by completing the registration form here: BLENDED LEARNING HEALTH

Depending on future staffing, this opportunity may also be available in the Spring for eligible juniors.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Roach, AP of Guidance, at SWillia35@schools.nyc.gov

Please find more information about Health and PE HERE

  • Guidance Department Update 9.8.23

    Dear LaGuardia Families,

I hope all is well with you. The Guidance Department has been hard at work connecting with their students, and reviewing program change requests. We are ensuring that are students have a safe and happy start to the school year. As you can imagine, the start of the school year can create some anxiety for students. However, our guidance counselors are here to support students and families during this back-to-school transition.

To further support our students, we have identified a post-secondary, (college specialist). We will be sending out more information next week to all students and families regarding how to connect.

We are working diligently to respond to all students and parents. Please be patient while we work through each individual request. We hope to respond to all communication within the next 2 school days. Please be on the lookout next week for updates regarding student support opportunities.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    In partnership,

    AP Williams-Roach

  • Program Change Update 9.10.23

    Dear LaGuardia Families,

We hope you are having a restful and enjoyable weekend so far.

Here is another update regarding program adjustments.

We have received many requests and are working diligently to review and submit them.

As the Google form states, we cannot honor preference changes now.  We can only focus on correcting programming errors and oversights. Based on the requests received so far, we would like to provide a little more guidance to save you time and help you manage your expectations:

All studio course change requests must go through the studio department supervisor.   They will decide based on studio requirements and share with your Guidance Counselor.

All changes based on accelerated courses and Regents exams taken in middle school: Algebra 1 (Regents grade of 80 or higher), Living Environment or Earth Science, World Languages, or History Courses must be accompanied by the necessary documentation. A transcript, letter from your previous school on official letterhead, or final report card indicating the course passed are all acceptable forms of documentation and must be submitted to your guidance counselor in support of your change request.  You may attach a copy via email.

All World Language level changes (Spanish 1 to Spanish 3) must be directed to your language teacher and the World Language department supervisor, Mr. Mannino (mmannino@schools.nyc.gov - rm 513).  Your current teacher will assess your proficiency and determine if a change of placement is appropriate, and then let your guidance counselor know.

Since these are preference changes, all PE changes will NOT be addressed by the Guidance Department but must be directed to your PE teacher.  The PE department will make a lateral switch into another section where possible.

Health is a graduation requirement and will not be dropped from your schedule.  We are only dropping Health if you have previously taken and passed this course.

The guidance department is reviewing over 1,000 responses and hundreds of emails.  Many requests do not meet the criteria. Here are some examples of requests we cannot honor at this time:

    • Teacher change requests - unless you have previously taken a course with the teacher and were unsuccessful.

    • Lunch period change requests - unless there is medical documentation.

    • Requests to drop a course to shorten your day.  All students must be programmed for a minimum of 8 periods of instruction AND a lunch period.  You may not drop lunch.

    • Requests to move your class from one period in the day to another period.

Please review this message carefully and consider it a response to your emails and Google Form requests.

    • Please direct studio course adjustment requests to your studio Assistant Principal.

    • Please direct language-level change requests to your teacher and the department Assistant Principal.

    • Please provide documentation for accelerated courses passed in middle school, as we are still waiting to receive many student records.

    • Please direct Phys. Ed. changes to your Phys. Ed. teacher.

These steps must be taken for us to make an informed and timely decision regarding your requests.

Please continue to be patient for those of you whose requests meet the specified criteria for acceptable program change requests.  The guidance department works closely with the programming department to make the necessary adjustments.  You will be notified when the adjustment has been made.  Please keep following your current schedule until you receive the new one.  Please be reminded that a change to a course may lead to a change in your entire schedule.  The program office attempts to minimize that as much as possible, but sometimes it cannot be helped.

We expect all program change requests by Tuesday, September 12th.  You may access the program change request form HERE

Thank you for your partnership and understanding.

    Sincerely,

Ms. Roach and the Guidance department.

  • LaGuardia Physical Education and Health Update

    September 8, 2023

    Dear LaGuardia Families:

I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. I am addressing some important developments at LaGuardia with Physical Education and Health.

As we all know, the pandemic has had a profound impact on our student community. Beyond the physical health concerns, it has also taken a toll on the mental health and well-being of our students. We have been closely monitoring this situation and have taken steps to ensure that the school environment remains supportive and nurturing for all our students.

One of the measures we have implemented to address these concerns is a change in our school schedule. In response to the unique challenges our students have been facing, we have adjusted our daily schedule to include shorter class periods. Specifically, we have changed our class periods to 41 minutes each. This is aligned with other specialized high schools in New York City.

Additionally, the transition from the previous schedule to 41 minutes now requires that students take PE 5 days per week to meet the minimum requirement for graduation and health for one semester. This change in our schedule will not only allow for more comprehensive and engaging PE sessions but also provide our students with more structured routines that can contribute positively to their overall mental health. Maintaining a healthy balance between academic learning and physical activity is crucial.

Students in 12th grade have been scheduled for PE and Health in the Fall term. Health is a one-term course, while PE will take place in the Fall and Spring semesters. This will ensure that students meet the NYSED Graduation requirements. Please see the chart below for further information:

    Image

If students want to maximize their schedule with academic and studio courses, they can take health in a blended learning environment. This would mean that students would attend Health in person during 11th period (after school) twice weekly and then complete the remainder of the coursework asynchronously through iLearn. We will send more information out about this option next week and hope to start the program during the week of 9/18.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these changes or any other matter related to your child's education at LaGuardia, please contact your child’s assigned guidance counselor. We value your input and partnership in providing the best possible educational experience for our students.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding during these unprecedented times. Together, we can navigate these challenges and continue to prioritize the well-being of our students.

Principal Marwah and I will schedule a meeting regarding this information next week. Please look out for information regarding the time and date.

    Warm regards,

    Greg Brummell

Assistant Principal of Physical Education, Health, and Security

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts

    September 7, 2023

    Dear LaGuardia Families:

Thank you for helping us make the opening day of the 23-24 school year a success. The building is alive again because of the extraordinary energy, positivity, and artistry the students brought today!

As I greeted them on the red carpet this morning, I was reminded of how special our students are and how lucky we are to be a part of this learning community. As I visited classrooms, I watched teachers greet their students with warmth and excitement for the new school year.

While we are still working out a few kinks, I am happy the school year is starting strong! Students were happy, safe, and excited to be back with their friends and teachers.

I look forward to meeting you at upcoming conference days and school events.

In the meantime, please visit the Back to School Important Information document for updated information.

    Opening Days at LaGuardia!

    Supplies

Students should come to school with basic supplies they are comfortable using to learn, ensuring there are ways to capture notes and organize paperwork. Traditional pen and notebook, as well as electronic devices, are both welcomed depending on the student’s preference. Any specific supplies needed for individual courses will be shared by the teacher, and wherever possible, we have set aside funding to provide class sets of specialized supplies to students free of charge. We also have basic school supplies available for any families in need. Thank you to our thoughtful Assistant Principals, generous Parents Association, and helpful Alumni & Friends for making these supports possible.

    Family Income Inquiry Form: https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/PickDistrict

    Student ID

Students must have their ID card on them at all times. Every time a student enters or exits the building, they must swipe their ID card. Students may be asked to show their ID at any time at LaGuardia by faculty/staff and outside the building by NYPD truancy officers. For student safety, students who forgot their ID will not be permitted to leave the building for Open Lunch.

Student ID Cards are distributed in the first days of school. Students may complete the Online ID Process Form to expedite ID cards generated for them. Lost ID cards can be requested and picked up from the Dean's Office, Room 229.

ID Cards for 9th-grade students will be available for pick up tomorrow in the lobby by staircase D.

    MetroCards

All students who live more than 0.5 miles from LaGuardia receive a student MetroCard for three trips: one trip to school, one trip to after-school activity, and one trip home. It can only be used by the student to whom it was assigned and is valid on weekdays between 5:30 am-8:30 p.m. A new student MetroCard is issued on the first day of each semester.

Students involved in activities that end after 8:30 p.m. on weekdays or occur on weekends are provided with special 2-trip MetroCards. We have also set aside funding for families who need MetroCards to attend family events at LaGuardia.

Metrocards will be available for pickup tomorrow in the lobby after school.

    9th Grade Math Placement

Many students took and passed Algebra I in 8th Grade and its corresponding Regents exam but were placed back into the Algebra course this year.  This was not an error but an attempt to ensure better mastery of the subject matter and success in Geometry.

Students who passed the Algebra Regents in middle school with a grade of 80 or higher were automatically placed in Geometry.  According to the NYC DOE Academic Policy, students may earn up to 4 credits in Algebra.  Based on the actual raw score of the 2023 Algebra Regents, we strongly encourage students with a score less than an 80 on the Algebra Regents exam to take an additional year of Algebra.   This will provide them an opportunity to strengthen their foundation and skills in preparation for the subsequent courses in the sequence.

Families who would like their child to take the diagnostic exam may request to do so by contacting the math department AP, Justin Mackey (Interim) jmackey2@schools.nyc.gov

    Guidance Supports

All students are assigned to a guidance counselor according to their studio. The same guidance counselor stays with each student through all four years at LaGuardia to provide comprehensive services in supporting students in reaching academic, personal, and college and career goals. Students are scheduled to meet with their guidance counselor periodically throughout their four years at LaGuardia, and are encouraged to independently connect with their guidance counselor as the need arises. Families are invited to reach out to guidance counselors anytime to discuss their child’s well-being. Guidance counselors are advocates who can help students and their families connect with valuable resources.

    Dear LaGuardia Community,

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year! We are excited to meet new students and to welcome back our returning students. I hope your summer was restful and filled with experiences that will inspire your artistic work throughout the year.

Below, you will find some information about the start of the school year. Please review this information to ensure a smooth first day of school.

I wish you a fantastic school year and look forward to meeting you!

    Sincerely,

    Principal Marwah

Contact Assistant Principal Ms. Shelliann Roach: swillia35@schools.nyc.gov

    Electronic Devices

Students are welcome to utilize electronic devices for learning purposes during the school day. Teachers may ask students to put away devices due to the nature of the activity. School iPads and Chromebooks are available for students to check out and keep for the school year by submitting the signed Device Agreement to Technology Office Room 317. This device can be kept at home and/or brought to school during the day.

    Schedules

We will have printed schedules for students who cannot access information electronically. Students needing schedules can go to the mezzanine upon arrival.

    Add/Drop Requests

Please complete this form if you would like to request a change to your program.  Program changes will be honored for errors/mistakes on your program.  Preference changes cannot be honored at this time.  Remember that a program change can result in a change of your entire program.

Please attend the classes on your program until you are notified and receive a new program.

Please allow three school days for a response. Program changes are subject to seat availability, with graduation and studio requirements as a priority.

Please  submit your change request form AND communicate all program change requests to your guidance counselor as soon as possible, by Tuesday, September 12.  At the bottom of this document you may find your assigned Guidance Counselor.

    Complete Family Income Inquiry Form

We ask that all families, regardless of financial situation, complete the Family Income Inquiry Form that ensures we receive funding to support our programs for all students. Completing the form also ensures that individual students are eligible for financial assistance for the cost of standardized testing, college applications, and special activities.

  • Opening of School Welcome; September 1, 2023

    Dear LaGuardia Community,

I am thrilled that today is my first full day as Principal. I would like to thank everyone for warmly welcoming me as leader of this amazing institution.  I had tremendous experiences as both a LaGuardia Vocal Major and a Vocal Music teacher.  As Principal, I want to ensure that our community has the same opportunities that I did – and bring higher expectations to what is possible during your time at LaGuardia.

Thank you to everyone for their patience, understanding, flexibility, and support as we prepare for the first day of school on Thursday, September 7, 2023. There are a lot of moving parts preparing and we are methodically making the necessary preparations.  While we are not there, yet, everyone will receive more detailed information on Wednesday, September 6.

Our programming staff is still working on getting student programs/schedules finalized.  Being ‘finalized’ is when we have done everything we can at that time to get all students the course requests, graduation requirements, and studio classes.  Generally, programs are not finalized until the day before school.  If a change needs to be made, we will explain how you request to add/drop a class

Below I have attached a copy of our daily Bell Schedule, which can also be found in the Links section on our homepage.

    Best,

    Deepak Marwah

  • School Leader Search

    Hello Laguardia School Community,

Over the past several weeks, my office has worked in partnership with your School Leadership Team (SLT) to interview candidates for the position of principal at Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS of Music & Art and Performing Arts. The C30 hiring committee, which was comprised of Laguardia families, staff, and students, had an opportunity to meet with five qualified principal candidates. The committee recommended three of the candidates for a Level II interview. I met with the hiring committee and SLT last Friday to share the name of a finalist and to commence a seven day review period aligned to the C30 hiring process. We were very fortunate to meet with a number of highly qualified candidates. Throughout the process, there was one candidate who distinguished himself from the others. It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the appointment of Deepak Marwah as the appointed principal of Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Mr. Marwah most recently served as Arts Director for the New Rochelle School District. Mr. Marwah is also a Laguardia High School alum and former teacher.

The Parent Association will send out a notice for an upcoming opportunity to meet Mr. Marwah and hear about his vision for the school. I have attached a letter to the school community from Mr. Marwah.

The Spring Drama Festival production of RENT is sold out for the remainder of its run.  Beginning at 6:00 PM, a stand-by line is formed where there is a possibility of cancellations or returned tickets.  Families are encouraged to donate tickets not being used to the school so the seat can be resold, helping more people to see the show with the revenue going to the Drama Department.

  • Senior Trip to Central Park for Class of 2023 Photo

A long-standing practice at Laguardia is including a group photo of the graduating class -- and each studio -- in the yearbook.  Most years, this is accomplished by the graduating class walking to Bethesda Fountain, Central Park, for the photographs.

This year’s field trip date is Thursday, February 16, 2023.  Seniors leave from school at a designated time and return by the end of Period 5 (12:05 PM).

A permission slip is required of every student.  The permission slips have been printed for Seniors and can be picked up off a cart outside Room 230 (across from the Dean's Office.)

Permission slips must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned by noon on Tuesday, February 14.  Your OP MUST be on the form.  This will allow us to complete the organizational items necessary for safely walking 850 students to Central Park.

For students who know in advance they are unable to attend this date, we will gather their names and work to have them featured in other sections of the yearbook.

This event will be a great outing for the Class of 2023.  Please pick up and return the signed permission slip sooner rather than later.  We don’t want to deny Seniors the opportunity to be in the group pictures due to  a lack of permission.

NYCSA (Parent/Guardian) & nycstudents.nyc (Student) Accounts

All Administrators, Guidance Staff, and Secretaries can assist with account access and reset.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS

Being registered and active in NYCSA (https://www.schoolsaccount.nyc/) will ensure that you have access to all of your child’s academic and attendance records, updating emergency contacts, receiving official communications from the school, and more.

The DOE has recently posted three forms that families should complete on NYCSA:

  • Media Consent for NYC Department of Education Use
  • Request to Identify Parents on Active Duty in the Armed Forces
  • New York State Education Department’s Digital Equity Family Questionnaire

If you have already created an account and should click on “Forgot your password” to reset your account.
