LaGUARDIA ARTS PARENTS ASSOCIATION MEETING
JULY 22, 2009
IN ATTENDANCE: Lil Arbogast , Lynn Hippen, Judy Maeda, Deirdre-Manning, Denise Madison, Michael Terry, Cecilia Pineda Feret, Nancy Sanchez-Taylor, Debra Rossi, Marvin Bishop. Charlie Kramer, Ken Reid, Lisa Terry, Nell Cote, Debra Well, Susan Reilly, Carol Sternhall, Diana Zim, Susan Metzger, Cherie Sprotsy and Cheryl Meredith.
Co-President Lil Arbogast brought the meeting to order at approximately 7pm. LiL asked each member to say there name and what position they hold.
Thanks were given to Lynn Hippen for making the beautiful nameplates.
Minutes from last month were approved.
LiL Arbogast introduced our Guest Speaker – Ms. Kim Bruno the principal of Fiorello LaGuardia High School.
Ms. Kim Bruno provided the following information:
- Budget is on hold.
- Teachers are salaried until they go to another school.
- It is not known if Tweed will pick up their salary.
- Five teachers are waiting to be picked up by Tweed.
- There will be a reduction of classes in the fall.
- Some senior classes, some electives, and after school programs will be reduced.
- Five classes were cut: Biology, Physics, two Spanish Classes and one English Class.
- One Dean will not be with us in the fall.
- Two Guidance Counselors are out on Maternity leave – they will not be replaced.
- Ms. Bruno will be teaching an Audition Technique Class to seniors (three times a week).
- Any staff leaving will not be replaced.
- Schedules are preliminary based on the budget.
- Many Parochial Students will be attending LaGuardia in the fall.
- Many Parochial Schools have closed.
- We have cut back each year on auditions.
- Audition weekends usually cost in the range of $160,000.00.
- Labs will be apart of each respective science class, and held during eleventh period, which has been eliminated.
- The school day will start at 8am and end at 3:59pm.
- Classes will be 45minutes long.
- The extra 5 minutes will give children more time in their studio.
- The school will be offering AP classes and pre-calculus after school.
- Teachers will also continue to tutor students.
- Peer tutoring will continue after school as well.
- One of the dancers from the Broadway play Billy Elliot will be an incoming sophomore.
- Also a great addition to our school will be the son of Wynton Marsalis.
- Ms. Bruno shared with us that she rents space in our school over the summer.
The Movie Fame
Steve Asher has asked Ms. Bruno if we could do a screening of the Movie Fame.
She has agreed but would like to review the film first. This will take place the first week in September.
Rising Stars Dates: February 12 – 14.
Chorus Line: December 10 – 12.
Special Fundraising Dec 13
Auction – May 8th.
Naughty Marrietta (Opera) March 11-13
September 9th – first day of school.
September 15 – Board Meeting.
Treasury Report was given
Auction still standing at $90,184.50.
Annual appeal $118,000.00.
It was stated that the College office went over a little.
Studio Income went up.
We earn more spent more.
Drama went down $5, 000.00
Everything else stayed the same.
It was stated that the Art department never had an after school program,
in the future we are looking to change that.
Fund Raising Challenges
Identify Alumni.
Star Sidewalk.
High Profile Alumni.
Sending appeal to corporations.
Denise Madison made a lovely suggestion, for the senior class, they would be able to buy a plaque with their names printed on them.
Cherie Sprosty spoke about the annual appeal. She asked for ideas on what the letter should state.
Cherie also stated that people enjoy having their names in the program, tote bags not too much interest.
Payment Plan for Annual appeal suggested by Jill, this way of payment was used in her child’s middle school, this seemed to be a good way to have parents pay installments, more convenient.
In the letter Cherie will also state how the parents help us last year and in what capacity. It will be stated that all pledges of any amount are honored.
Spoke on keeping planners, vote was taken to keep them.
Dues are asked in the beginning of the year.
Fundraising appeal will go out after Sept 15th.
All studios will be making their appeal in the beginning of the school year.
This is our 25th Anniversary Ideas will be given for a anniversary appeal.
There are 700 9th grade names in the database, it was stated that Bill will send the database.
Lil went over the calendar dates.
Budget meeting August 6th.
Next Meeting August 20th.

Annual Appeal/Phon-a-thon - Chair: Cherie Sprosty is needing a co
College Office-needed a PA liaison to Veronica York, helps coordinate the College Fair
Hospitality-Co-Chairs: Cheryl Meredith and Debra Rossi coordinate audition week ends in the fall, provide refreshments for Rising Stars and The Musical, fall of 2009-“A Chorus Line” and Parent/Teacher Conference dinners for the teachers in the Fall and the Spring.
Rising Stars producers: Co-Producers: Maris Shilling and Allen Zwirn. Judy Maeda and Lynn Hippen will also produce .
Budget Committee: Chair - Treasurer Denise Madison, Michael Terry, Lil Arbogast, Nancy Brenner, Ken Reid, and Cherie Sprosty.
Grants Committee: Nell Cote (Art), Deirdra McArdle-Manning (Music), Roseanne Allen (Dance), Liz Hinden (Drama), and Carol Sternhell (Tech Theater) Every September each teacher is given a form for a PA mini grant. This is something a class needs that is not paid for by the DOE and is between $500 and $1000. Last year $12,000 was in the budget and not fully used. This committee reviews the requests. Then Ms. Bruno needs to be made aware of the requests to make sure we are getting the best rate. Some things are cheaper for the PA to buy and other things is cheaper for the school to buy.
