Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and City Council Member Gale Brewer together provided half a million dollars of funding for 14 new Steinway grand pianos, replacing old pianos (some of them over half a century old) that could no longer be economically repaired. The pianos arrived in mid June, and have already been deployed in the Music Studio, where students and faculty have been already been enjoying them for performances and classes. SLT Member Ellen Rieser wrote the grant proposals, working with AP Bernice Fleischer. LaGuardia wishes to thank everyone involved. (Note: Many of the uprights also need replacing. Anyone wishing to donate a new Steinway upright should contact Ms. Fleischer for details as to the Music Studio’s needs.)
